Meet my late Mom, Bev, z"l. She was such a Jewish Meet my late Mom, Bev, z"l. She was such a Jewish mom in a lot of ways. She loved to feed me. She'd save the best lamb chop or pear for me when I was a kid. She bragged about me and was my biggest fan; "did you know that my daughter songs opera??" "Mom, the plumber doesn't care..." At times our relationship was complicated, as many mother-daughter relationships are. At times her love felt so intense and even overbearing. Throughout history, Jewish mothers held the family together and had to keep everyone alive during times of poverty and persecution. It's no wonder they want to feed us and love us and love on us with food. It's inherited from generations before. Some scholars say that negative stereotypes about Jewish mothers stem from misogyny and a fear of women usurping patriarchal authority. So I want to celebrate the Jewish mother, with all her quirks and virtues. I want to honor the warm, sensitive, big-hearted, curious, funny, wounded, imperfect woman my mom was. I am so grateful for the feedback I’ve gotten, and for you 32 lovely Instagram followers ❤️ At the same time, I’m putting a lot of pressure on myself because I feel like I have to keep the momentum going to build an audience, which means putting out consistent content. And damn that’s hard when depression and anxiety and seasonal affective disorder get in the way. How do people do this?! I was working on a new blog post to put out in time for New Years. But I was feeling so anxious about it. It was going to be about why fatphobia isn’t about health; I was doing a lot of research to back up that claim, trying to make it perfect, feeling major impostor syndrome, and having arguments in my head with imaginary trolls. I'm feeling overwhelmed trying to do social media and content marketing "right." I really just want to be authentic. So I'm gonna try not to overthink it. (we'll see ... Christmas is usually hard for me. Most years I fee Christmas is usually hard for me. Most years I feel left out because my family has never celebrated it, most of my friends are with their loved ones, and everything is closed. This year I’m spending it sick and alone. 🤧 Here’s how I’m going to take care of myself/some suggestions for you if you’re also a little lonely this holiday. 🤶Get cozy AF. Bring on the heated blanket, jammies, slippers. All the tea. Movie marathons. Doggy snuggles. Look out the window at the snow. Listen to some gentle wintry music. Go for a leisurely walk. 🙍‍♀️Let myself be sad if sadness comes up. I don’t need to distract myself from my emotions, because I know I can handle them, and they will pass. I have always survived them, even the most difficult ones. 🍲Eat a traditional Jewish Christmas dinner - Chinese food. Plus a side of matzo ball soup. I was going to do this with friends, but I’m keeping my germs to myself, and while I’m super bummed not to share this meal and have some quality time with my Jew Crew, I’m still gonna enjoy this as much as I can. Chinese food is something I let myself eat any time I want it, and I allow myself to eat as much of it as I want, so there’s no anxiety around it. It’s still a little special, but it’s also just a meal. And anyways, it’s also a Jewish holiday… Shabbat shalom 🙂✡️ [Pictured: I'm holding a mug that says "oy vey all day."
